VIVA LUPITA!
[mexico city residency]

Viva Lupita! is a collection of offerings to Guadalupe, the patron saint of Mexico. During my time in Mexico City, I’ve learned that she is a very significant figure - a powerful symbol of Mexican identity and pride. An image of hope, love and compassion, and a source of strength for those facing hardship. A protector for Indigenous peoples, she represents unity between native and colonial cultures.
Although I’m not a religious person - I found myself drawn to Guadalupe. I love all of the charming altars created for her throughout the city. She is a comforting and mystical motherly figure that everyone seems to respect equally. She is quite literally everywhere and there is no denying the power that she holds. I’d like to think it was her magical energy that called me to create this body of work - to send out a reminder that during extremely challenging times like these, it is crucial to find something to believe in and to not give up hope.
As Guadalupe is a figure of unity between pre-hispanic and colonial cultures - I wanted this body of work to express a deep respect for this land and her traditional owners, particularly the Mexicas, whose ancient culture is still so strong despite efforts to snuff it out. The work also embodies my appreciation for modern Mexico and all of the vibrant Mexican people who welcomed me and looked after me - making my time here so incredibly special.
Mexico has given me a wonderful gift - one that my spirit really needed, and one that I will treasure forever. I’m very grateful to have been able to immortalise this experience through these artworks!
